Trump Tweet Touts “Tremendous Progress” at the VA

President Donald Trump, who promised sweeping changes to the VA during his campaign, tweeted that he is making “tremendous progress” at the distressed agency. Earlier in the week, Trump signed an executive order creating an accountability office at the VA. The new office would protect whistleblowers from ridicule by fellow employees of the VA. Known as the Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection, Trump stated the new office would ensure that substandard care for veterans will never be acceptable.

The secretary of the VA, David Shulkin, said the new office would remove so-called “barriers” that prevent the agency from transferring or firing problematic employees. Many in the VA argue it is next to impossible to terminate “bad managers’ because of the long grievance process required by union rules. President Trump also signed a bill extending a program under the VA allowing some veterans to seek medical care outside of the department’s network. IN 2014, several veterans died as they waited for care at the Phoenix VA Medical Center.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the VA will not hire new employees to staff the new accountability office. Instead, existing employees will transfer into the new department despite an agency-wide shortage of employees. Shulkin said he did not have specific dollar amounts on how much the new department would cost, but he noted it will take a “substantial commitment.”

Hilton Resorts to Hire 20,000 Veterans

In recent years, a few American companies have expressed interest in adding more veterans to their payrolls, and one of the latest is the international resort chain Hilton.

According to a report by CNN Money, Hilton plans to hire 20,000 veterans by the year 2020. This hiring practice dates back to 2013, when Hilton executive announced a plan to hire 10,000 veterans, a milestone they recently achieved. The next phase of this program will be an enhancement to give preferential hiring consideration to veterans as well as to their spouses, and the target is 20,000 new employees.

The current unemployment rate among veterans in the United States stands at five percent, slightly above the national rate of 4.5 percent. One of the problems faced by veterans is that their military skills do not always translate easily in the civilian sector; for this reason, the human resources professionals at Hilton have developed a system to match the job requirements of their resorts and restaurants to those used by the Armed Forces.

Hilton now knows, for example that one of the Military Occupational Specialty codes for infantry in the Marine Corps is 0311, equivalent to 11 Bravo in the Army. Since the human resources department of Hilton is familiar with these MOS codes, hiring managers feel more comfortable placing veterans in hospitality, security, food service, or engineering jobs.

The Hilton headquarters office is located in McLean, Virginia, a community known to be home to many military families, veterans and federal employees.

Southern California Veterans Appraise Trump’s 100 Days

Not spectacular and not disastrous are the passing grades being given to United States President Donald Trump as he completed his first 100 days in office. KGTV Channel 10, an ABC affiliate station in San Diego, interviewed veterans in Coronado Island, a Southern California community that many veterans call home, and their assessment of President Trump was satisfactory for the most part.

One veteran gave Trump a B because he thinks the President is trying his best even though many of his actions are deeply flawed. Another veteran remarked that Trump is also trying to look out for military families. A couple of other veterans believe that Trump’s close relations with generals and top military commanders are commendable.

There is a consensus about Trump’s erratic behavior being the product of self absorption, something that veterans are not happy with. They believe that Trump should fine-tune his attitude and ignore reports and comments made by the press.

Overall, Southern California veterans seem pleased with Trump; however, they would like him to grow a thicker skin when dealing with the media, with legislators and with ranking members of his own party. In other words, they would like to see a more diplomatic Trump.

Many veterans do not know have an opinion on the ongoing investigation of General Michael Flynn and his alleged ties to the Kremlin. For the most part, veterans are waiting to see the results of the investigation, which may connect Russian meddling into the political campaign that helped to elect Trump.

Mr. Trump’s Tear-Down Budget

Mick Mulvaney, the Budget Director for White House, has defended the approval of the president to reduce the military budget for 2018. This is one of the most prominent promises Trump made to the people during his campaign. He is also determined to relieve the stress accrued on the people due to heavy taxation. For this reason, he will be seen as a man who keeps his promises. According to Trump, he is prepared to spend heavily on Military and borders. Starbucks Promises 25,000 Jobs To Veterans

Starbucks is often in the news for serving new types of coffee and other types of drinks. However, this time they are in the news for a whole new reason. They are giving jobs to the country’s heroes. Veterans will be able to work for the coffee giant and earn money to supplement their income.

They have designated 37 stores to be “veteran family stores.” These stores will be staffed by veterans or military staff members wives. Many of these stores are close to military bases. Trump to Sign Order Creating New Accountability Office at the VA

As the last day of his first 100 days in office approaches, President Donald Trump is looking to add to his accomplishments by signing an executive order creating a special department at the Veterans Affairs holding employees of the VA accountable for wrongdoing. The new office will probe allegations of wrongdoing, including those employees who look to retaliate against so-called “whistleblowers.” The office will also seek ways to adequately address the problems, including disciplinary proceedings. According to USA Today, the new office will report directly to David Shulkin, the secretary of the VA.

Shulkin stated to reporters that accountability is one of the biggest issues the VA must address. Part of being accountable, Shulkin stated, is the mission of serving the nation’s greatest heroes, veterans. Shulkin went on to say that part of the new office’s focus is to identify employees of the VA who deviate from the mission of serving veterans. Shulkin also stated that the creation of the new accountability office shows the dedication and desire of President Trump to reforming the VA.

Veterans Returning Home

The transition from military to civilian life is slightly different for every veteran. However, it is a serious adjustment that needs to be made. Some veterans have spent their entire adult lives in the Armed Forces and have no idea what it is like to exist without this unique support system. Talented individuals struggle to find a place in a world that is very different from the one they knew before. It takes a solid education to assist these veterans in making the change from uniform to corporate America. There are several programs in place that are designed to help military service members make the difficult adjustment to the civilian world. The veteran and their family members are all encouraged to participate in these training sessions.

The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is designed to provide the information that a veteran needs to conduct themselves outside the military structure. The course may vary in length depending on the target audience. There are various speakers enlisted to make presentations to veterans and give them insight on how they can use their current skills to be successful on the outside. Understanding their status as veterans is crucial to maximizing on the opportunities that are in place for each prior service member. The Department of Veterans Affairs is a completely different organization from the one that they have been working with. Many veterans find themselves frustrated dealing with VA policy and give up on many of the benefits they are entitled to. Representatives from the VA are able to clear up the traditional confusion that goes with these processes.
